Gum Disease May Contribute to Alzheimer’s

Taking care of your teeth isn’t just about a pretty smile – it could protect your brain as you age. Recent studies show that good oral hygiene, like brushing after meals and regular dentist visits, can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease later in life.

  • Recent research has identified Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacteria responsible for gum disease, in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
  • The studies involved participants aged 55 and above who did not initially show signs of cognitive decline.
  • Researchers conducted dental exams and memory tests, then measured brain structures over time.
  • Findings revealed that even mild gum disease was linked to faster rates of brain shrinkage, particularly in the hippocampus, which plays a critical role in memory.
  • Each tooth lost was associated with brain shrinkage equivalent to 1 to 1.3 years of aging.

At Long Island Dental Specialty, we emphasize the importance of regular dental visits for maintaining oral health and addressing issues early. If you experience any discomfort or concerns about your oral health, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us. Our experienced team is here to ensure your dental health supports your overall well-being.
