Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

Have you recently been diagnosed with gum disease? If so, you might be wondering whether this condition can be reversed. If you’ve been diagnosed at an early stage of the disease, curative treatment is available. Later stages of gum disease can be managed with advanced treatment techniques. At Long Island Dental Specialty, we’ll help you understand the stages of gum disease and available treatment options so that you can take control of your oral health.

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection that harms the gums and the structures that support the teeth. It starts when plaque, a sticky coating of bacteria, accumulates along the gum line. Without proper oral hygiene and professional dental cleanings, plaque can harden into tartar, resulting in gum inflammation. This stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. At this point, your gums may be red or swollen, and they might bleed easily when you brush or floss. Luckily, gingivitis can be reversed with professional dental cleanings and improved oral care at home.

If you don’t get treatment for gingivitis, you may develop a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. With this condition, inflammation makes your gums pull away from your teeth. This creates pockets that can fill with bacteria, and it destroys bone and connective tissue. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to reverse periodontitis, but proper treatment can keep the disease from getting worse. With appropriate care, you can maintain gum and jawbone stability and prevent tooth loss.

If you develop periodontitis, your specialist may recommend scaling and root planing. These procedures clean your teeth and gums more effectively than regular cleanings, and they remove bacteria below the gum line. If your condition is severe, you may be offered flap surgery or bone and tissue grafts. These surgical interventions can stabilize and support your teeth and gums. At Long Island Dental Specialty, we use the most advanced treatment methods, and we offer personalized care plans to ensure that you get the best possible results.

Prevention is the most effective way to fight gum disease. Along with periodontal exams and professional cleanings, daily brushing and flossing are vital for healthy gums. Even if you have medical conditions or genetic factors that increase your risk for gum disease, you can reduce the likelihood of severe gum issues by being proactive about your oral care.

If you’ve noticed bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession, or other signs of gum disease, early intervention can make all the difference. At Long Island Dental Specialty, our compassionate team members specialize in diagnosing and treating all stages of gum disease. Whether you have mild gingivitis or a more advanced form of the condition, our experts will make sure you receive the best possible care.
