Intraoral Camera and Digital X-Rays in Great Neck
Advances in the field of dentistry have reduced the time dentists need to pinpoint areas that require attention. Now, cavities and other areas are readily visible, no matter how small they may be. This reduces the time spent in the dental chair and can alleviate some of the dental anxiety that many patients experience.
At Steven I. Cooper, DMD in Great Neck, we rely on two specialized technological advances—an intraoral camera and digital X-rays—to provide improved diagnostics and more delicate treatments. If you'd like more information on either of these two tools and how we use them, call Steven I. Cooper, DMD at (516) 210-5129, or submit a request on our website, and we'll be happy to answer your questions.
What's a Digital X-Ray?
Usually, when people think of an X-ray, they envision a gargantuan machine in their orthopedic surgeon's office. Although these machines take X-rays, they're primarily designed to X-ray large bones and the overall skeleton.
A digital X-ray, however, refers to X-rays taken of your teeth from different angles, and you've probably already had at least one of these. Dentists typically include at least one X-ray in their preliminary diagnostics during your initial appointment at their office, and may follow up periodically to ensure nothing has changed.
The four general types of digital X-rays include:
- Bite-wing X-rays: These show the upper and lower molars and highlight the areas where they meet.
- Occlusal X-rays: These show the bottom of the mouth and are mostly used to track the development of a child's teeth.
- Panoramic X-rays: These depict the entire mouth, including the jaws, jaw joints, nasal and sinus cavities, and teeth.
- Periapical X-rays: These show a close-up view of an entire tooth from the roots in the gum to the visible crown.
What's an Intraoral Camera?
An intraoral camera is similar to an X-ray but shows the exterior of a tooth, whereas an X-ray shows the interior. An intraoral camera is very small and can be inserted into the mouth to photograph one or more teeth or other items.
Although the term may be unimpressive, intraoral cameras have revolutionized the field of dentistry and greatly reduced the need for a metal mirror to examine hard-to-reach areas. It also illuminates the area and provides evidence, whereas the metal mirror provides no illumination and relies on the dentist's memory.
Intraoral cameras can transmit real-time images of a tooth or other area, zoom in, and highlight areas as necessary. This can be useful for a simple extraction or a complex surgical procedure. The intraoral camera has endless uses and has become an invaluable tool and timesaver for dentists and their patients.
